Dockworkers pause strike after Biden administration’s appeal to patriotism hits the mark

Aided by intense pressure from senior Biden administration officials, the shipping companies, represented by the U.S. Maritime Alliance, significantly increased the raise they were offering the dockworkers to 62% from their previous offer of a 50% boost in pay. URBANA, Illinois -- With the COVID-19 delta variant spreading and air travel surging, a perfect public health storm is brewing at airport security checkpoints. Just a few weeks ago, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) assessed whether the U.S. Transportation Security Administration was taking the necessary actions to reduce the spread of infections amongst transportation security officers (TSOs) and air travelers at airport security checkpoints. Given the recent virus transmission risk and uncertainty, their recommendations were woefully inadequate and missed the mark to make substantive changes that could have a lasting impact on public health and the safety of air travelers.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden beseeched Americans to meet his deadline of having 70 percent of American adults partly or fully vaccinated against the coronavirus by July 4. In a speech, he asked Americans to "knock on doors and talk to friends and neighbors" about getting vaccinated so that the country can reach the much-touted 70 percent threshold — which, public health experts say, marks the point at which the novel coronavirus will slow down and eventually cease in its spread.
