MARK DOHERTY NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF INFORMS (September 8, 1998)

And he is an experienced member of our profession. I know he has the talents and background to lead the institute through the opportunities and challenges ahead."

"I feel like I’m returning home to family," said Mr. Doherty. "Operations research and the management sciences gave me a tremendous head start and real advantage in my career. Now, I have the opportunity to return the favor to the profession."

Mr. Doherty has a graduate degree in operations research and used operations research techniques when he was an analyst with the Cincinnati Police Department in the 1970’s. He is a former member of The Institute of Management Sciences, which merged with the Operation Research Society of America to create INFORMS in 1995.

Previously, Mr. Doherty was Executive Vice President of the American Society of Pension Actuaries in Arlington, Virginia; a Chicago-based consultant with EDS Management Consulting Services; Executive Director of the Actuarial Education & Research Fund in Schaumburg, Illinois; and Director of Research for the Society of Actuaries in Schaumburg. Most recently, he was Chief Operating Officer of the Cardiology Research Foundation in Washington, DC.

Mr. Doherty is a Certified Association Executive. He has an MBA in Finance from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an MS in Statistics and Operations Research from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He is a native of Chicago.

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) is an international scientific society with 12,000 members, including Nobel Prize laureates, dedicated to applying scientific methods to help improve decision-making, management, and operations. Members of INFORMS work primarily in business, government, and academia. They are represented in fields as diverse as airlines, health care, law enforcement, the military, the stock market, and telecommunications.
